Getting Ready for Transformation

The people of ancient Rome distinguished between Gallia Cis-Alpina and Trans-Alpina: the familiar Italian heartland here—with its fortified roads and well-trodden, comfortable paths that made travel predictable—and the land beyond the Alps there. In between lay high mountains that were arduous to cross. Adventurers and conquerors longed to venture into this still-unknown land. Incidentally, this also held true in later times, with the reverse longing felt by people traveling, for example, from Germany to Italy!
