A student from Australia’s Steiner school movement has received one of the country’s most prestigious emerging art accolades. Jasmine Jazz Lancaster Merton, a Year 12 student at Glenaeon Rudolf Steiner School in Sydney, was crowned winner of ABC TV’s Portrait Artist of the Year 2026 after impressing judges throughout the competition with her technical skill, artistic sensitivity and distinctive approach to portraiture.
The national television competition brought together 54 artists from across Australia. As the youngest contestant in the field, Lancaster Merton advanced through the heats, semi-finals and final, earning praise from the judging panel for her «wonderful artistic sensibility» and «incredible level of skill».
Winning the competition came with a significant commission: creating a portrait of Australian actor, singer and children’s entertainer Justine Clarke for the National Portrait Gallery of Australia. The completed work is now on public display in Canberra, where it will remain on view until March 2027.
Lancaster Merton’s success did not emerge overnight. In 2025, she won the Young Archie award in the 16 to 18 age category with a self-portrait titled My Name is Jazz, an early indication of her artistic promise. Her passion for portraiture stems from a long-standing fascination with people and character, themes that continue to shape her work.
The achievement has been celebrated by the Steiner education community. According to Steiner Education Australia, Lancaster Merton’s accomplishment reflects not only her dedication and talent but also the importance of nurturing creativity throughout a young person’s educational journey. School leaders praised her as a role model for aspiring artists and highlighted her commitment to developing her own artistic voice.
Speaking about her experience, Lancaster Merton described the competition as both challenging and rewarding, noting that it pushed her beyond her comfort zone and helped her grow as an artist. As she completes her final year of school, she plans to continue pursuing artistic opportunities and exploring a future in the arts.
Her success serves as an inspiring example of how young people can flourish when artistic development is supported alongside academic learning, and of the enduring role of creativity within Steiner education.
