Award at Royal Melbourne Show

At Sophia Mundi in conjunction with their Ancient India Main Lesson, the Class five handcraft students create a 3D felt peacock with an embroidered tail. The peacock is the national bird of India and also a frequent visitor to the school grounds at the Abbotsford Convent.

The students begin by observing the peacocks in the playground and drawing a detailed picture. They then sculpt the peacock body from clay and in doing so, discover the key to transforming a 2D drawing into a 3D sculpture. After the peacock’s body is created, they learn new simple embroidery stitches. From these simple stitches, students have the freedom to create beautiful and vibrant colour combinations and patterns, with added sequins and other finishing touches. They revel in the development of their new, deeper way of noticing fine details – now with an artist’s eye.

The project offers students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the majesty of the peacock whilst exploring the colour and qualities of Ancient India.
